Alleppey is the backwater hub of Kerala,
attracting a large number of visitors from all over world. It is also known
as the rice bowl of Kerala with its vast spread green paddy fields. Alleppey
is also famous by the name of Alappuzha. It is located on the shore of
Arabian Sea and is bordered by Kottayam, Ernakulam and Kollam districts of
Kerala.
Alappuzha Port was used in the ancient days mainly for the export of
spices, like Pepper. It is also a very famous pilgrimage place as many
temples and churches are situated here, like the ancient CSI Christ Church,
Poomkavu Church, Mullackal Raha Rajeshwari Temple, Bhagawathy Temple and
Mannarasala Temple. Alleppey is famous for its snake boat races like Nehru
Trophy Boat Race and Champakulam Moolam Boat Race.
Kochi, located at a distance of 94 km
is the nearest airport, which is connected by domestic flights from
Bangalore, Kolkatta, Delhi and Chennai. It is well connected by trains from
different major cities in India. The city is also connected by National
Highway, connecting it to rest of Kerala and neighbouring states by KSRTC
and private buses.
