St Francis Church

Mattancherry Palace
The palace was built by the Portuguese in 1557 and was gifted to the then king of Cochin Raja Veera Kerala Varma. It was later renovated by the Dutch in 1663. The palace is also famous for the mural paintings that depict the scenes from ancient Indian epic Ramayana.

It is the birth place of Adi Shankaracharya, who was the first philosopher to propagate and consolidate the doctrine of Advaita Vedanta.
