Beypore Beach

Beypore BeachBeypore was one of the important ports and fishing harbours of ancient Kerala and was a prominent commercial hub of that era. Located in the south of Kozhikode town, the place was host to many of the early Arab and Chinese and later on European travellers. Gradually Beypore also began to be developed as a shipbuilding centre, which was especially in demand in West Asia. The shipbuilding tradition of the place is as old as 1500 years.

The travellers still continue to throng the place, albeit for a different reason – the beach. Building sand castles while sipping coconut water was never so exciting. Another exciting part of the seashore here is the stone bridge that protrudes into the sea for about 2 km. It enables you to have more of the Arabian sea without having to touch the waters. Want to get closer to the sea? The only thing left for you is to venture into the sea on a fishing boat with a local fisherman.

Nearby Attractions
The Pookot lake is near to the beach as is the popular Thali temple. The Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary is also very near to the Beypore Beach so you can easily explore these places while you are at the beach.
Activities on the beach
Visit the shipbuilding yard, also located on the Beypore beach, to see how the skilled craftsmen construct the renowned ship Uru. The shipbuilders are known as Khalasis and about 50 of them work throughout the year to construct one Uru. These boats are made of teak and jackfruit timber.

Even otherwise, the Beypore beach is apt for enjoyment and recreation. The sandy beaches are just right for sunbathing and for those looking for some tan.

Shopping Attractions
You can also buy here the miniature boats which are made of teak or coconut. These can be bought from Kairali Emporium in Kozhikode.

Facilities at the Beach
Do some fishing of your own and if you are not interested then the fresh Kerala seafood can also be savoured from the stalls located on the beach. Finish your day with a rejuvenating sip of coconut water. A wide range of water sports options are also available at the Beypore beach which include parasailing, swimming and surfing.
