Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary



Established in 1985, Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary covers an area of 285 sq km. It is a paradise, filled with calm and tranquil greenery, located in a valley between the Annamalai ranges of Tamil Nadu and the Nelliampathy ranges of Kerala. Several rivers like Parambikulam, Sholayar and Thekkedy gushes through the hilly and rocky areas of the sanctuary. The undulating landscapes offers the perfect set up for the sanctuary to thrive in its fullest.

Best Time To Visit
The sanctuary welcomes the wildlife lovers throughout the year, except during the monsoon season i.e. between June to August.

Highlights :The Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary is a natural habitant to 39 mammal species, 268 varieties of birds, 16 amphibian species and 61 species of reptiles.

Flora
The dense forests of the sanctuary comprises of diverse variety of flora species. Bamboo, rosewood, sandalwood and teak are found in abundance here. It also has some marshy lands and scattered patches of grassland.

The sanctuary is haven to diverse variety of fauna species. One can spot fascinating wildlife attractions such as tiger, leopard, lemurs, Indian wild dog, elephant, horns, antlers, bison, sloth bear, nilgai tahr, jungle cat, wild boar, nilgiri langur, lion tailed macaque and many more. Avifauna
The Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary is a an ideal place for the bird enthusiasts. It boasts more than 140 species of rare and exotic birds. Grey headed fishing eagle, Peninsular bay owl, great pied hornbill, Ceylon frogmouth, Nilgiri wood pigeon, Malay noght heron, oriental darter, black eagle, black capped kingfisher, cormorant, great Indian hornbill, black woodpecker, broad billed roller and many more are the inhabitants of the forest.

Apart from having a glimpse of wildlife attractions of the forest, tourists can delight themselves with boat cruise. Boats can be arranged at the Parambikulam Reservoir. Sail through the lush green surroundings to have a panoramic view of forest site.
